Feministens aktive valg (i)mod den seksuelle frigørelse

Abstract

This bachelor thesis explores how Danish fourth-wave feminists combine their statements on sexual liberation with a ‘hyper-feminine look’ – an appearance which by older feminists has been marked as a sign of oppression. Departing from a theoretical reading based on an eclectic approach composed of psychoanalysis and queer theory, this thesis finds that the fourth-wave feminists’ messages together with their feminine appearance both can be liberating and limiting for the emancipation of their own sexuality as well as the discourse on women’s sexuality in general. Drawing on fourth-wave feminist Maja Malou Lyse’s statements in the sex-educating tv-show ‘Sex med Maja’, this thesis proposes that Lyse’s undisguised dream of becoming a completely self-dependent ‘sexual subject’, may limit her own intrapsychic liberation. By the means of her ‘utopia’ she seems to be unconsciously influenced by her narcissistic drive, which arguably makes her even more dependent on others’ affirmation. Thereupon, Lyse seems to underestimate the importance of her own position as an arts student for her discursive intelligibility in spite of her sexualized attire. This may give less privileged subjects dressing likewise false expectations of having the same opportunities of being received equally agentic. On the other hand, the privileged fourth-wave feminist’s ‘hyperfeminine’ attire may also challenge hegemonic norms which dictate that ‘sexy’ women are less self-determining. In addition, the feminist’s emphasis on the feminine, also seem to enable a sexual liberation due to her ‘self-gynecological’-praxis. This praxis possibly visualizes female sexuality as a 'presence' in itself, which thus confronts the hegemonic, phallocentric idea that femininity is a 'lack' of masculinity.
